A British explorer attempting to become the first person to make a solo crossing across Antarctica has died from complete organ failure, his family has announced.

He is a former Army officer Henry Worsley, 55, from Fulham, London, was 71 days in to his attempt to become the first adventurer to cross the continent completely unsupported and unassisted.
But with just miles to go to complete the history-making journey, he had to call for help and was airlifted off the ice on Friday, before passing away while in hospital in Chile yesterday.
In total, the gruelling trek encompassed more than 950miles of some of the most inhospitable terrain on earth, featuring blizzard-like whiteouts and daily temperatures of -44C.

The married father-of-two attempted the expedition to mark the 100th anniversary of the failed Sir Ernest Shackleton journey
